Lichtenstein Castle in Hout Bay is one of Cape Town's most exciting Guest Houses. A replica of Schloss Lichtenstein in Southern Germany, the castle is situated on a privately owned mountainside surrounded by fynbos and affording breathtaking views of the bay and enfolding mountains.
The main hall, with its carved beams, vaulted wooden ceiling and leaded stained-glass windows, is luxuriously furnished. Armour, original paintings, sculpture and antique furniture invite you to relax in a setting that is gracious and supremely comfortable. And for the stormy Cape winters, a vast fireplace will add to your contentment. The dining room seats 24 people at a period oak table lit by wrought iron chandeliers and flanked by hand carved oak sideboards. Here you can enjoy Lichtenstein Castle's expertly prepared food and fine wine in an atmosphere of pampered ease. This facility is available for group bookings for between 18 to 30 guests. A vast amount of research has been put into ensuring that each and every room has furnishings and fabrics authentically matched to the pervading Gothic character of the Establishment. The result is an opulent medieval interior that creates a genuine time-warp. The drawing room decked out with sculptures, paintings and pieces of medieval armour, boasts a real vaulted wooden ceiling, a vast functional fireplace and is overlooked by a gallery. Move over into the adjoining dining room with its mighty solid oak table overlooked by wrought iron chandeliers, images from the Age of Chivalry evoked by knights and maidens be-flagoned, in full feast complete with fiddlers and songsters. Then there's a winding staircase that leads to the five main floors and three more which wind upwards through the Tower. The Bar area is complete with a full-sized snooker table and a huge fireplace. The cellar (which leads onto a garden) can accommodate over 120 guests around tables comfortably and still give room for an adequate dance floor. There are 7 double bedrooms, 4 single bedrooms and an Executive Suite. All are en-suite and the Executive Suite, which has its own lounge and balcony. The beds, dressers and wardrobes are all period reproductions and the rooms are draped with brocades, tapestries and velvets. Finally for those who find the sea far below uninviting, there is a swimming pool with adjoining mountain waterfall immediately at hand. |
