Constantia Uitsig

"There are cooks, there are chefs and there are creators of exquisite sensual experiences. At its best Frank's food produces a shock of pleasure. Deep layers of flavour, textures and aromas entwine, leaving a seductive memory that you want to recapture again and again." Mica and Marina Naumann

Frank Swainston is the host and chef extraordinaire. His hospitality sets the tone for the convivial atmosphere and friendly and professional service at Constantia Uitsig.

This enormously popular, award-winning restaurant seats 120 people in the original Manor House on the estate, and the menu focuses on robust flavours of Italy with forays into exotic Asia.

Booking is essential

London-born Frank, who describes himself as “an amateur chef in essence” hit the right gastronomic note from the word go with his Mediterranean/Provencal-style cooking. Twelve years on the restaurant has consistently retained its “top ten” position and remains a very popular dining venue. It has achieved an international reputation, which has attracted the rich and famous from around the world.

“This is a restaurant one leaves reluctantly, feeling wonderfully relaxed, with no desire to do anything but retire to a leafy corner of the garden and nap. Despite its popularity, the restaurant is surprisingly unpretentious. As a colleague quite rightly said: ‘You haven't lived until you've eaten here’.” Business Day Newspaper

La Colombe Restaurant

"Whenever I want to celebrate, whenever I need cheering up. The last meal before I leave town, the first when I return, Always La Colombe. Simply, sublimely, superbly the best." Theo Otten

La Colombe offers innovative Southern French - inspired cuisine. The stylish Franck Dangereux presides over a brigade of chefs dedicated to using the finest local and imported ingredients to create dishes to delight discerning palates. The proficient service at La Colombe creates a relaxed ambience, where guests enjoy the mouth-watering cuisine and superb wine selection.

“ … full of surprises, tastes, colours, shapes, smells … it makes us fly. Eviva La Colombe.” Juliette Binoche

“O my, so delicious! Thank you for a magnificent feast” Oprah Winfrey

Franck, who has a classical French training, which was honed in the Michelin-star kitchens of Roger Verge and Louis Outhier, veers instinctively to the cooking styles of his native Provence and the French regions. Hitting the top ten within his first year, 1996, he has consolidated his reputation as an inspirational chef with a place in the top ten every year since and, for four years, holding prime position in Business Day’s South African Restaurant of the Year awards.

It was therefore no surprise when Franck’s cookbook, Feast, was proclaimed as one of the three best chef cook books in the world in 2004. The comments from the international jury were:

“Creativity at its best, combining great technique and ingredients in a show of excellence in Africa”

“Feast” was also admired for its excellent front cover and all-over design, which was exceptional.

The River Cafe

“Beautifully presented, enticingly aromatic and deliciously tasty – it’s like a dream with your eyes open.” Catherine Scott

Like its formidable forerunners, Constantia Uitsig and La Colombe Restaurant, The River Café’s popularity can be accounted for by a contemporary, fresh-on-the-day menu, location and friendly, relaxed atmosphere. It offers a restful new perspective of the valley’s vines and mountains.

This delightful venue serves sumptuous breakfasts, lunches and teas. The sunny outside seating area is surrounded by a profusion of herbs, interspersed with bright blooms. The natural cornucopia is reflected in Johan’s generous portions and primarily organic ingredients. The menu includes fresh, innovative salads, sandwiches and pastas and the extravagant eggs Benedict.
