The Story of Thorfynns
The owner of this restaurant, developer of Monkey Valley, Judy Sole (born
Topping) is descended from the chiefs of an ancient Viking tribe. In those
early primitive days, the chiefs were believed to be the sons of Gods, hence
Thorfynn - "fynn" meaning "son of " Thor, the God of thunder after whom the
weekday Thursday is named.
In the 9th Century, the Vikings, a seafaring nation, crossed the channel in
longboats and invaded Britain - raping and pillaging. One small group under
Thorfynns the Skull splitter eventually conquered large tractsof North East
England (in Lancashire and Yorkshire area, many of their descendants can
still be found today). One Thorfynn, sailed across to what is now the
Americans with Lief the Lucky and landed at Greenland. (Greenland in those
days was still green and only became icebound in the 15th Century).
During the great consonant changes over the centuries that followed; the
name of their descendants changed becoming Thorpyn, Torpin, and eventually
Topping (Dick Turpin; the notorious "Highwayman", is also said to be one of
their descendants).
The daughter of King Thorfynn married into the Scottish Royal family in the
10th Century and, strangely enough, in the 20th Century these two families
again linked when Peter Topping, descendant of Thorfynn, married Elizabeth,
descended from the Royal House of Scotland.
The resulting five children, born in Africa, are all in some way responsible
for the development of Monkey Valley.
