Orange Richtersveld

If ever you have felt the need to be suspended in time, the Richtersveld Orange River is the place to do it. For millions of years, nothing has changed here and the proud, ever-constant magnificence of Africa is overwhelming. This river rafting trip offers a relaxing and educational journey through time and beauty, with a few rousing rapids along the way to bring you back to the present.
The section of the Orange River we raft was chosen because of its sheer magnificence and natural wealth. The Richtersveld National Park semi-desert, through which the river runs, is one of the largest mountains deserts in the world . Over 50 % of the plants here are endemic and support fascinating and varied animal and insect life. The banks are lined with willow and ebony trees which provide shade and shelter to river trippers, and forming an oasis green band of life through the “orange splendour” of this semi-desert. The Fish Eagle shows its majesty as it soars above the rolling waters while the Goliath Heron with its 6-7 foot wingspan eases its way from the rivers edge. Not to mention the green brilliance of the Malachite Kingfisher as he dives and darts between the river and trees.
But perhaps the most unique aspect of all, is the ability to drift through two billion years of earth time. The arid, mountainous landscape is composed of many varied rock types, which illustrate some of the major geological events which occurred in the Southern Hemisphere over the last two billion years.
We at River Rafters, believe strongly in maintaining this unspoiled and delicate environment. We also believe in educating our clientele on environmental issues through a practical understanding of this area.
Sleeping on the river banks under the stars, and enjoying our scrumptious cuisine, has only ever brought compliments. It is a relaxing, yet awesome trip with a few challenging rapids ... an easygoing tour down an African river

Richtersveld 4 Day Itinerary
Languid, carefree drifting is what this river rafting adventure offers. For 4 days, you’ll wallow under the toasting sun, sleep under the flawless stars, and relax under the influence of worriless days. The only decision you’ll have to make is which side of the boat you want to swim from... So, for absolute self-indulgence, this one comes highly recommended.

Arrival.. Arrive at our riverbank basecamp, Diepduik, just across the Namibian border. You will be welcomed with a roaring fire, and perhaps you’d like to take a refreshing swim or a game of volleyball after your day of travelling. Please bring something to braai that night if you haven’t had dinner along the way.

Day 1... After an early breakfast, your guide will give you a safety talk and equipment demonstration before you go onto the river. You’ll spend the morning drifting and getting the hang of paddling! Your first lunch break on the banks of the river will take your breath away, with its majestic surrounding mountains. We continue downstream until we find a campsite where we can camp for the night. And that’s where you’ll sleep, with nothing between you and the heavens above.

Day 2 and 3 ...Discover what it’s like to wake up in the desert. You may climb up to an abandoned fluorspa mine, where you’ll be rewarded with a huge panorama of the Richtersveld and the Orange River winding its way through the desert. Each day follows a pattern - languid drifting with the current; hopping in for a swim when you wish; tossing a Frisbee; or just lying back and taking it easy. We spend each night at a site of our choice on the banks.

Day 4...On the last day, we’ll be picked up at the end point between 2 pm and 4 pm. A drive through the desert will return us all to base. You are welcome to spend the last night with us, supper will be provided.
