| Hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters. Summer may be windy, especially when "the Cape Doctor" (Southeaster) blows. Winters (June to September) are usually mild, although snow falls on the mountain ranges of the Cape and Natal and occasionally in the lower - lying areas, when a brief cold spell can be expected throughout the country.
December to February is our summer and the area becomes crowded with those seeking winter sun holidays. Autumn is still warm but with far fewer tourists - perfect for hiking and sporting activities. Winter can be cold although generally the temperature does not fall below freezing. Spring brings the carpet of flora that covers the Garden Route. Temperature & Rainfall
Sun protection The sun here is extremely strong, even in Winter, almost equivalent to the strength of the sun in tropical areas. It is easy to be fooled by Cape Town's wonderful climate into thinking that you will be safe and not burn, beware!. All skin types should be using sun protection (min factor 15) even when it is cloudy. Try to avoid going out in the sun between 11.00am and 3.00pm. Those with fair skins should be extra careful as there is the potential to burn even after only 15 mins. If you are on the beach remember that you will be more at risk because of the reflection from the sea and the sand. Don't forget to wear a hat (preferably wide brimmed) whenever possible. |
