| Close to Cape Town and surrounded by the magnificent mountain scenery of the Jonkershoek valley lies the historic town of Stellenbosch. Stellenbosch is situated 111 metres above sea level on the banks of the upper reaches of the Eerste River. Here the river flows out of the mountains and into a shallow, alluvial and fertile valley. Visit the estates, book a picnic basket, taste the wines ….. then take a few special bottles home with you when you go. You can even explore the winelands on horseback, or book a wine tour and let someone else do the driving. Most of the cellars offer cellar tours as well as lunches in their shaded gardens or restaurants together with a bottle of wine of your choice. The Cape Wine Academy in Stellenbosch offers visitors a wonderful opportunity of learning about local and international wines. Beginner courses will allow visitors an insight into the local wine industry before embarking on a tour of the wine routes Following the Stellenbosch Wine Route is one of the most enjoyable ways of seeing the south-western Cape. Stellenbosch, the oldest town in South Africa after Cape Town, was founded in 1679 and is undoubtedly the most scenic and historically preserved town in Southern Africa.
